MarTavious Adams and getting IT....

For the past seven years in September, I have had the pleasure of playing in one of my favorite tournaments, at probably my favorite golf course in the world - Pebble Beach. You might expect it to be either the AT&T in the winter or the US Open this past summer at Pebble, but it's neither. During these years Pebble has hosted The First Tee Open with the generous help of sponsors, Home Care & Hospice and Wal-Mart. It is without a doubt one of the highlights of The Champions Tour for me.

Dustin, Jackie, and The First Tee

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of listening to two young First Tee participants speak in front of an adult group of First Tee supporters here in Kansas City. They spoke of who they were and how The First Tee has positively affected their lives. For those who are unfamiliar with The First Tee, it is an organization which introduces youngsters to golf and to the ‘Nine Core Values’ associated with the game, which not so incidentally are the tenets of living a wholesome life.

Summertime Thoughts (The Opens, Dustin Johnson, and the Grail)

The travels of summer have been quite concentrated to say the least. After (most likely) my final and emotional appearance in the US Open at Pebble Beach, with my son Michael on my bag, I took a few weeks off to prepare for a whirlwind schedule. This schedule located me in London, St. Andrews, Carnoustie, and Seattle in four successive weeks. The first week was spent promoting my twin instructional DVD set, “Lessons of a Lifetime”, with a series of press interviews and a short game clinic. Then on to compete in three major championships in a row.

Memories of Links Golf from St. Andrews

St Andrews, Scotland: I arrived yesterday from the blistering London heat to the cool, misty coastline of St. Andrews (where the Open Championship will be played this week). The winds are calm by comparison to the ominous gray skies.

The Watson Challenge

I just finished competing in a local tournament called The Watson Challenge, (yes, it's named for yours truly) and again for the fourth in as many years, we fought the elements, as it seems that Kansas City during the second week of June is the time for Mother Nature to produce the entire summer's water needs for the breadbasket of Midwest. More than 9 inches fell during the three days causing real problems for Loren Breedlove, Superintendent of the Kansas City Country Club, leading to the cancellation of the final round of the 54-hole medal play tournament.

Byron and Me

Last week, I enjoyed a trip to Dallas, and back down memory lane. I got to speak of my relationship with Byron Nelson, or Lord Byron as he was called (a moniker he always eschewed). The occasion was during the HP Byron Nelson Golf Classic where I was awarded the Byron Nelson Prize, sponsored by a great friend of both Byron and the tournament, T.

My First National Open

The United States Open Championship, or what my father called the National Open, is being played at Pebble Beach this year for the fifth time in its history. It's the tournament I have always wanted to win most, as I grew up listening to my father's many stories about our Open champions: Francis Ouimet, Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan, and always about Sam Snead (my father's golfing idol) who never managed to win it. Dad could name every winner from 1895 on until the day he passed, even after his stroke.

My Most Memorable Victory

Greetings fellow golfers.

The beginning...my father, Ray Watson, started my life of golf in 1955 at age six. He put a cut-down, hickory-shafted 5 iron in my hands and immediately taught me the correct grip and stance. A scratch handicap player, Dad loved golf with genuine passion which he instilled in me throughout our many years together. I was a very lucky kid to have a dad who knew and loved the game as well as he did, and who was willing to teach me this game so early in my life.
